Police Officer

I study in the Police Technology program at the Ahuntsic College to become a police officer in the province of Quebec. In this three years of training, we learn everything about the police officer job and how to do it. For example, we are studying the Criminal Code, Civil Code, Highway Safety Code and we are doing simulations of interventions that will happen to us later to know what we need to do to help the citizens. We are also learning how to do some physical technique to immobilize and arrest criminals. The formation gives us what we need to be the best police officer. The aim of police in Quebec is to protect life and public safety and to ensure the protection of private property and we are learning how to do it. I have chosen this website below because it summarizes not only a day in the life of a police officer but also their career in general. I will summarize this website and make some links with the police in Quebec.

The website says that the police form comes in many ways such as sheriffs, detectives, state troopers and police officer. It's really relevant of the police worldwide because in a police station, there are different grades that a police officer can have. It's also true in Quebec, where you can find a commander, some sergeants, lieutenants, captains and many more. The website also says that the main goal of the police officers is to keep the public order and to protect citizens life and their property. It's the same goal as the police in Quebec. My chosen website also relates the stress that a police officer may have because of the pressure on him. He has to maintain the law, ensure the thrust of the citizens in the police, arrest criminal and to be the protection between a citizen and a dangerous situation. All of this is the same pressure that lives every police officer in Quebec. Finally, the website says the prerequisites to be a police officer: be in a great physical form, graduate from a police academy and pass the psychological and the physical tests. These prerequisites are the same to be a police officer in Quebec, except that in Quebec every police officer must go through Nicolet (Quebec's police academy) to become a policer officer.

NYPD

source: http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/home/home.shtml
This is the New York City Police Department (NYPD) website. The website belongs to the City of New York and it is ruled by the City and the police department. It's for the citizens of New York or the tourists because it gives some general information about the police department. It shows their mission, how to be a police officer in New York or how to contact them. The website gives some more specific information to be alert like the crime statistics, the rewards and the wanted people, the missing person or how to prevent crime. The website also gives  some information to find some services such as language access plan, permits, firearms licensing, etc. This website is related to my field of study -Police Tech- because almost every city in Quebec has a website but they're all wrote in French, that's why I chose this one. Another reason why this is related to my field of study is because the NYPD is almost the most popular police services in the world so it's interesting to examine their website.

In this video, I will do a walkthrough demonstrating how perform a specific task on the New York City Police Department website.

3 Good Reasons to Be a Police Officer in Quebec

 Julius Schorzman from Wikimedia

There are plenty of jobs in the world. There are doctors, surgeons, lawyers, accountants, etc. There are also three popular jobs that involve saving the life of citizens : firefighter, paramedic and police officer. We need all these jobs and all the others who have not been mentioned above in order to be a society. Which job will you choose? Police officer is one of the best job that exist. Here's a list of the three best reasons to be a Police Officer in Quebec (Quebec is one of the 10 provinces in Canada).

1. Help Citizens

In Quebec, the first task to any Police Officer is to help the citizens. It's the first reason on my list because officers are the protection of  society and it is such a great feeling to know that you changed the day of someone by helping that person. For example, a citizen may have lost his cellphone and it can be the worst thing for him. Taking the time to help him and find his cellphone can mean the world for him. Police Officer can do many other things to help the population. One of them is to respond to the distress call of the population and to go directly helping them. It can be to stop a fight between two citizens, arrest a criminal, securize someone who has been robbed or even saving the life of someone. Another way to help the population is when a police officer patrols a neighborhood and a citizen ask for the help of the officer. The officer can meet him and help him directly, for example by helping someone who as a conflict with a neighbor. There's a third way to help the population. This one is more general because it is the power of a police officer to arrest and apply the law, for example, the Canadian Criminal Code. It helps the whole population because when an officer arrest someone who does bad and illegal things such as driving under the influence of alchocol, the danger connected to this person for society decrease. In my example, when an officer stops someone for drunk driving, it helps the whole population because that person could have killed someone. That's why helping citizens is my number one reason to be a police officer in Quebec.

2. The diversity of the profession

In Quebec, policeman are doing different things. In a day, they can put handcuffs on a criminal, then go to the court to present evidences  to a lawyer and after that, drive for one hour in their police car, waiting to have an appeal. All this, and even more, can happen in a day of a police officer. Also, in their career, they can take several paths. They can decide to stay on patrol or try to be an investigator, a sergeant, a captain, a dog-trainer and even more, be the chief of a police station. These are just a few paths that a police officer can choose to take. In fact, there's many more. That's why the diversity of the profession is my second reason to be a police officer because the job will never be boring.

3. After career advantage

In Quebec, the career of a police officer is approximately 25 to 30 years of service, in average. For example, if someone has a job in a police Department at 22 years old, this person can take his retirement at 50 years old. Retiring at age 50 is really fast, compare to other jobs. This is a short but amazing career. All police officer in Quebec, after his or her career, receive a retirement pension each year. This pension is up to 80% of the salary of the officer. It can be 50k per years. The other advantage of the after career is the fact that a police officer can have some other great jobs after their retirement. For example, a retired police officer can be a teacher in Police Technology program at Cegep. The officer can also become a security guard for mall. The early retiring, the great pension and the jobs after the career are the after career advantages, which are my third reason to be a police officer in Quebec.

In conclusion, there are three excellents reasons to be a police officer in Quebec : Help citizens, diversity of the profession and after career advantages. With all the jobs that we can do in the world, I think that police officer in Quebec is the best. I hope you enjoy reading this article.
